Stories Long Forgotten: Formerly Enslaved was created as a part of a Digital History graduate course project at Appalachian State University. This website explores the lives of 4 formerly enslaved individuals within the state of North Carolina. These individuals were all interviewed and photographed through the Works Progress Administration which employed writers during the Great Depression to interview individuals who were formerly enslaved between 1936-1938. All individuals who were interviewed had a memory of being enslaved, thus the reason why they were all chosen to be interviewed. As someone who is descended from enslaved people, I wanted to highlight their humanity through this project by merging my passion for genealogy in order to find records of these individuals post-slavery. These documents showcase the fact that they had children, grandchildren, were land-owners, etc. which is something that they probably would not have imagined while enslaved. The genealogical research conducted utilized several different databases (census and vital records) with FamilySearch.org and Ancestry.com, Wake County, North Carolina Register of Deeds office and the Library of Congress. Special thanks for Dr. Rwany Sibaja and Dr. Andrea Burns for the opportunity to learn in their courses which made me critically think about individuals who were possibly forgotten.
